River Bats: Bats Bang in 3-1 victory

There was a talent show Friday night at Joe Faber Field.
Ryan Sheldon didn’t sing, but he rang up eight strikeouts and allowed just four hits in seven strong innings.
And the dynamic duo of Kevin Johnson and Derek McCallum, who entered the game as the top two hitters in the Northwoods League, didn’t dance. But Johnson drove in McCallum as part of a two-run sixth, and McCallum added an insurance run with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly.
Those performances combined to highlight a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over the Brainerd Blue Thunder, the Bats’ fifth straight win after a franchise-record eight-game losing streak.
All that matters now, however, is that St. Cloud trails first-place Thunder Bay by a half-game in the second-half North Division race — with 12 of the 16 games remaining on the Bats’ home stage.
